Just For Kids, Inc. – Tenth Annual Golf Classic, Friday, August 20th, Woodhaven Golf Course, Glade Springs Resort
Beckley, WV – Just For Kids, Inc. is gearing up to host one of our most exciting golf tournaments on Friday, August 20th at Glade Springs Resort, Woodhaven Course. Twenty-seven golf teams are registered to support the work of our local child advocacy center. Now in its tenth year, this Golf Classic will be our most substantial fundraiser thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, participating golfers, and the loving dedication of Just For Kids volunteers and organizers.
Headlining this year’s Title Sponsor is Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapels. We also have gained two Tournament Sponsors: Terry and Hans Carstensen, and Kris and Mark Serbinski, both excited to help underwrite the event so that all team proceeds will go directly to supporting the children we serve.
Major sponsors include Tamarack, WV Orthopedic Trauma, A-2 Tent Rentals, Bypass Pharmacy, Green River Garden Center, New River Health, Dr. Steve Childress, DDS, Dr. Faith Payne with Raleigh General Hospital, Drs. Karen and David Rainey, Rick and Stoya Lay, Mary and Bill Lee, John and Tali Stepp, Sue Rice and Elke Falkenberg, Jan Allen and Judy Street, Tom and Sally Lemke, Pat and Rick Macak, John and Linda Stroud, and Gerry and Glenda Wait.
In addition, we have 11 silver sponsors and 39 hole sponsors.
“This tournament is a way to spread the word about the work we do and to raise needed funds for the children we serve.” said Marcy Nolan, Just For Kids Board President. “We have been informed that we will be losing some funding from our largest grant through the Victims of Crime Act this year, so each dollar we raise through the tournament becomes more critical. We appreciate the golfing community’s understanding of the importance of providing a safe and friendly facility for children who are experiencing the trauma of child abuse.”
Adapting from the COVID pandemic has been a big part of our focus at Just For Kids Child Advocacy Center. It is more important than ever to protect children who have limited access to trusted adults. We never shut our doors and continue to provide a safe and child-friendly space for children to tell their stories. If you suspect that a child is being abused, be sure to report it to the Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-352-6513. It takes courage to speak up.
Last year, despite the pandemic, Just For Kids Child Advocacy Center:
- Interviewed 268 children who were alleged victims of child sexual abuse, physical abuse or witness to violent crimes.
- 80% of those children disclosed actual abuse that they suffered. As hard as it is to imagine that so many children are being abused,
- only 1 in 10 children tell, so there are likely
- Over 2500 children in Raleigh and Fayette Counties who were criminally abused last year.
- Our three forensic interviewers get called by either child protective services or law enforcement to arrange an interview for a child when allegations arise. They conduct an average of
- 30 interviews a month, or more than one every day of the week. These children have been sexually or criminally abused, witnessed a violent crime, or experience severe neglect.
- 73% of the children we serve are under 12 years old.
As a nationally accredited child advocacy center, our four main goals are to:
- Work as a team with law enforcement, child protective services and the prosecutor’s office to provide a friendly environment in which to conduct forensic interviews of children who have been subject to criminal child abuse;
- Provide a family advocate to work with the child and family;
- Offer counseling to those children who disclose abuse; and,
- Provide prevention and awareness training in the communities we serve. Our new Outreach Advocate would love to meet and talk with you about opportunities to change the conversation about child sexual abuse.
Offices are located in uptown Beckley and Oak Hill. Just For Kids also provides the Stewards of Children program, a nationally recognized abuse prevention program for adults in the community as well as prevention outreach training for children in school settings.
